Traditional non-powered playgrounds often face the problem of “having plenty of equipment but lacking a narrative.” Slides,

climbing nets, and bounce areas stand alone; while children can get physical exercise,it’s difficult to create a continuous

exploratory experience. If large playgrounds lack clear pathways, they’re also prone to issues such as scattered spaces,

unclear play objectives, and a lack of varied experiences.

For urban parks and cultural tourism projects, families with children need more than just a place to burn off energy; they also

hope the project will feature a distinctive theme, a variety of activities, and amemorable experience. Therefore, the core challenge

this project must address ishow to transform a large expanse of green space into an immersive adventure with a starting point,

challenges, choices, and a finish line.

Drawing inspiration from Odysseus’s post-war journey home, and guided by the design concept of “Spatial Narrative of

the Epic Journey,” we have transformed the entire park into a non-motorized rope-and-net adventure course. The park is

divided into four themed areas: The Sea of Lost Souls, The Realm of Giants, The Land of Demons, and The Trials of

the Homecoming.

Each zone corresponds to a classic adventure, which is translated into interactive play scenarios for children through

activities such as jumping, crawling, traversing, balancing, sliding, navigating mazes, and dodging obstacles. The project

uses a linear narrative flow to connect the various challenge stations. Children, like “little Odysseuses,” can progress through

the main route step by step or choose to tackle side challenges on their own. Completing each node is like earning an adventure

badge, leading ultimately to the final destination. The color scheme features a vibrant combination of blue, purple, orange, green,

and yellow, symbolizing the ocean, magical realms, danger, and hope; the rope nets resemble a route suspended above the green

space, organizing the scattered play equipment into a complete epic journey.

Children “set sail” from the themed entrance and can first explore the intricate rope-net structure to find their way out,

then head to the soft bounce-net beds to rest and interact. As they continue onward, they’ll encounter swinging platforms,

surprise balls, bell obstacles, and a maze with multiple exits. Each section challenges their physical coordination, spatial

awareness, reaction time, balance, and courage.

Rather than simply assembling rope nets, slides, and obstacle courses, the project integrates each piece of equipment

into a specific plot point within the story. Children don’t just complete a play route; they embark on a coming-of-age adventure

that takes them from getting lost and facing danger to making choices and finally finding their way home.
